The folks at Nyko, on the heals of their incredibly innovative, useful and successful Worm Light, have released what I will reference as the bastard child of the Worm Light and a bad idea, which they have called The Blob Light, a light source for Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Color. I call it the bastard child because it does not work as well as the Worm Light and simply adds nothing to the original product, save, what Nyko calls, giving the system "personality".
The Blob Light is a weird looking rubber blob that affixes to the top of your Gameboy, attaching to the link port for power, and sort of hugging the top of your system. The light source is the same white light as used in the Worm Light. One thing that makes the Worm Light wonderful is the ability to move the light to minimize the inevitable screen glare; this allows use the light for other purposes (I've used it as a book light). The Blob Light has nowhere near the flexibility of the Worm Light and it is fixed much closer to the screen; in our testing here at the Gametour Labs that meant more screen glare and less utility. We also found the Blob harder to connect to our Gameboy systems, and experienced instances where the Blob simply fell off the Gameboy - not and ideal situation for a gamer. I also don't like the idea that they've designed it to LOOK like there is more than one light source when there is only one - - just makes it seem even cheesier.
We loved the Worm Light - it is the sort of thing that is a category killer - - virtually all the other light sources save knock-offs disappeared - - which we can't recall seeing from a third party accessory ever. If you need a light for your Gameboy, the Worm Light is the obvious and only choice - - the Blob Light just doesn’t cut it.
