Army Men 3D is a great and challenging one or two player title featuring those little plastic men a lot of us used to play with as kids. Instead of a straight port of its excellent PC game, 3DO has created a 3rd person strategic run and gun fest specifically for the Playstation. Players assume the role of the Green Army's Sarge as he attempts to lay waste to the evil Tan Army. After a quick spin through the Training Mode (Boot Camp), You're off on your first of many missions. The game runs smoothly in high resolution, with only a little pop-up here and there, however, this doesn't detract from the fun one bit. Another cool thing is how events occur around you as you're running about, putting holes in, blowing up, or melting those tan bastards. For example, a tank battle or soldiers running to take point far in the distance. Sarge animates quite well, as do the various enemies and vehicles, although you can get stuck on certain objects when you're driving (kind of annoying if you're in the tank!). The music and sounds range from adequate to excellent, and a stereo TV (preferably with a home theater setup) is recommended for maximum enjoyment.
The two-player mode is a capture the flag contest in which each player places a set number of soldiers in offensive or defensive positions around his or her base, then attempts to infiltrate the enemy's base. Although the frame rate takes a hit, the game is still fun, especially when you let your opponent get into your base on purpose, only to run face-to-muzzle with a pair of bazookamen before he can lay his grubby tan paws on your flag (heh, heh.) . In short, if you're looking for an excellent game that doesn't take itself seriously, pick up Army Men 3D... The Green Army Wants YOU!!!
